Wonton Soup

Here is a recipe for classic wonton soup:

  • 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 1/2 cup finely shredded Napa cabbage
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped scallions
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped cilantro
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped shiitake mushrooms
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
  • 40 wonton wrappers
  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • 2 cups water

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the pork, cabbage, scallions, cilantro, mushrooms, soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, sugar, and white pepper.
  2. Place a wonton wrapper on a clean, dry surface. Place a spoonful of the filling in the center of the wrapper. Using your finger, moisten the edges of the wrapper with water. Fold the wrapper in half to create a triangle, sealing the edges tightly.
  3. Bring the two corners of the triangle together and overlap them, moistening the ends with water to seal.
  4. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling.
  5. In a large pot, bring the chicken broth and water to a boil. Add the wontons and cook for 3-4 minutes, or until the wontons are cooked through and the filling is no longer pink.
  6. Serve the soup hot, garnished with additional scallions and cilantro if desired.

wonton soup info

Wonton soup is a popular Chinese dish that typically consists of wontons (small dumplings filled with meat, seafood, or vegetables) served in a hot broth made from chicken, beef, or pork stock. The soup may also include other ingredients such as bok choy, scallions, carrots, and mushrooms.

The wontons themselves are typically made from a combination of flour, water, and sometimes egg, and are filled with ground pork or shrimp, along with various seasonings and spices such as soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, and garlic. They are then boiled in water or broth until cooked through.

Wonton soup is often served as an appetizer or as a main course and is considered to be a comfort food in many parts of China. It is believed to have originated in Northern China but has become popular throughout the country and in many other parts of the world. In addition to its savory flavor, wonton soup is also known for its health benefits, as it is low in calories, high in protein, and contains a variety of vegetables and other nutritious ingredients.
