-
Cooking: Cover and cook on Low for 6–8 hours or on High for 3–4 hours.
-
The Finish: Stir the mixture thoroughly at the end of the cooking time to fully incorporate the meat into the thickened sauce.
5. Serving and Presentation
-
Over Grains: This savory tomato-beef mixture is delicious when served over a bed of fluffy white rice or creamy mashed potatoes.
-
Pasta Pairing: Toss it with cooked shell pasta or macaroni for a quick, “poor man’s” goulash.
-
Garnish: A sprinkle of fresh parsley or a dollop of sour cream can brighten the deep red tones of the dish.
6. Nutritional Overview
Ground beef provides a significant amount of protein and zinc, while the tomato soup adds lycopene, an antioxidant found in cooked tomatoes. To keep the dish leaner, you can drain the fat from the ground beef after the first hour of cooking or use a low-sodium version of the condensed soup.
7. Culinary Essay: The Versatility of Condensed Soup Bases
Condensed soups have long been a “secret weapon” in home kitchens because they function as both a liquid and a thickener. In this recipe, the tomato soup’s sugar content helps caramelize the edges of the beef, while its starch content creates a velvety mouthfeel that would normally require a roux. This technique highlights the “dump-and-go” philosophy of slow cooking, where the appliance does the work of reduction and flavor concentration that would otherwise take constant attention on a stovetop.
